The primary draw is its two championship golf courses, though the sprawling grounds also offer a range of pursuits that will prove inexhaustible during shorter stays, from kayaking and archery to tennis, falconry and fishing. For rainier weather – which you always need to account for in Ireland – there’s a gym and spa (my masseuse Stephanie was superb), but the pool area and its facilities (sauna, steam room and whirlpool bath) were dishevelled, basic and in need of maintenance. Fitness classes are held at the hotel, but I was told they are for gym members and hotel guests can’t join them. In 2000, Carton was redeveloped as a "premier golf resort and hotel", an action condemned by heritage groups, including An Taisce, and criticised in Seanad Éireann (the Irish Senate) by Senator David Norris. A hotel was added to the main house, altering it drastically, while the estate's eighteenth-century grounds were converted into two golf courses.
